The illustration shows a black bear (Epicallia villica) on a common daisy (Bellis perennis); a species of butterfly that is also common in our region from mid-May to early June, in its three stages after the egg has developed. The larva (caterpillar) searches for food in the leaves of its host plant, the pupa hides safely on the underside of its leaf, and the butterfly feeds on nectar from flowers while resting.
