The HAPHAZARD RERUNS series was created as a reinterpretation of Niko Novak’s music. Each song is presented in the illustrations through its own narrative.

The illustrations relate to individual tracks on Novak’s new album and depict a visual interpretation of the stories the musician tells his listeners. The series of works emerged from a mutual admiration for the work of both artists. Illustrator Tamara Mihalič explores the integration of musical and textual narratives into the narrative and format of a comic strip. Individual elements of the comic strip are expanded into standalone works that create a new narrative, one that is not necessarily linear.

The illustrations draw heavily on the classic comic strip style, evoking the atmosphere of Dylan Dog, and are executed in ink.

"The album HAPHAZARD RERUNS was published by the French publisher Ports of Call, as well as by ŠKUC, where it was released alongside the comic. In it, comic book author Tamara Mihalič convincingly depicts that dimly lit, secluded, gloomy world inhabited by Novak’s lyrical subject—a world that, in fact, strongly resembles our own if we look at it closely. Combined with the comic, the album thus acquires a visual poetics that is otherwise limited to album covers or music videos for most music, which deepens its expression, especially since it does not attempt to embellish or perfect the music." About the authors:

Niko Novak is known for his work with the alternative bands Dicky B. Hardy and Incurabili. Today, he is considered one of Slovenia’s leading singer-songwriters, known for his melodically rich songs and lyrically inspired texts. In addition to music, he is also active in the field of moving images as a set designer and actor.

Tamara Mihalič is an intermedia artist and videographer whose artistic practice focuses on materializing the invisible and the subversive, yet empiricism in her work serves as a tool for a cynical and humorous critique of everyday life. In addition to works that often combine, question, and test the boundaries of print, video, and performance, she frequently turns to more “conventional” media, such as illustration.
